Yesterday I drove through a torrential downpour to Tallahassee headed towards my friend’s funeral that will be held today beginning at 1:00. It was raining so hard it reached a “waterout” state equal to any “whiteout” situation I’ve ever witnessed. The skies were gloomy gray and the wind was howling and we saw numerous car crashes. The weather is supposed to get better today and I’m praying by the time of the gravesite ceremony it will be sunny and nice.
After the funeral I have to drive back to south Florida and I’m afraid that the Christmas traffic will be brutal. I was praying for holiday travelers on the way up and threw in a prayer for my wife and I for our own safety driving back. I saw a road sign warning travelers not to drink and drive during the holidays and it made me wonder how many people might perish on the roads over the holidays.
I once saw a sign down in the Florida Keys that asked: What’s your hurry you’re already here? It reminds me of an officer who pulled me over one time and asked: What’s your hurry? I looked at him rather sheepishly and asked if I’d been speeding. He looked incredulously at me and said that I passed HIM in his unmarked car and it took him ten minutes to catch up to me. The fine was heavy and the points against my insurance steep. The little time I might have saved by speeding was definitely not worth it . . .
If you are traveling this holiday season please be safe. Take your time and arrive alive.
I will be delivering my remarks at my friend’s funeral today at approximately 1:45. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will speak through me as we say goodbye to this great man of God.
John 3:8
“The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Have a great safe weekend and have a very Merry Christmas!
. . . and go to church this Sunday!
