With so much bad news out there especially concerning child rape for profit, we are often overwhelmed, but we finally got some good news and it came within hours of Congress giving its overwhelming approval to legislation designed to thwart sex trafficking by holding accountable online sites that facilitate the crime.
The Senate adopted the bill in a 97-2 vote March 21, barely three weeks after the House of Representatives had passed it Feb. 27 in a 388-25 roll call. The bill will go to President Trump, who is expected to sign it as early as this week.
Make no mistake this sends a loud message that the days of using the Internet to sell sex ads exploiting women and children are coming to an end! Donna Rice Hughes, Founder of the anti-sex trafficking organization Enough is Enough wrote:
“This was nothing short of a David and Goliath victory against the multi-billion-dollar trafficking industry and the tech giants’ who lobbied against the bill’s passage.”
In the past few days alone, sites like Craigslist, Reddit, Erotic Review, and others have acted to shut down their sex ads! Reddit banned posts like “Escorts,” “Male Escorts,” “Hookers” and “Sugar Daddy” shortly after the bill was passed, posting an updated disclaimer that “users may not use Reddit to solicit or facilitate any transaction or gift involving certain goods and services,” including “paid services involving physical sexual contact.”
Although Craigslist, Reddit and other sites have shut down personal sex ads following passage of this sex trafficking bill, our work is far from finished. Anti-trafficking organization Shared Hope International states that service providers working with child sex trafficking victims have reported that more than 80 percent of their clients were bought and sold on Backpage.com, and so far, Backpage has NOT TAKEN ANY ACTION to remove its ads! We must keep the pressure up!
Sex trafficking is an evil, slimy business and sex traffickers and pimps see victims as mere dollar signs – not human beings. This is big business for them, and they’ll go to any means to keep their illegal operations up and running but don’t be discouraged we’ve won a significant battle in this war.
I am encouraged to see that good has triumphed over evil. Satan has the money, the powerful greedy lobbyists, and the equally greedy tech giants in his claws, but as with David and his little slingshot, a small group of dedicated group of God’s people have relentlessly persevered and proved that giants can be killed.
The Lord willing, we will continue to win victory after victory. And make no mistake that God detests this evil with every part of his being.
