My son gave me a DVD for my birthday, “The Passion of the Christ”. I saw the movie after it first came out, but I watched it again last night. It was difficult to watch and I unsuccessfully fought back tears throughout the movie, but as difficult as it is to watch, I believe that it should be required of every Christian to watch it often. It would make a nice Christmas present and is very appropriate for this time of year. As I watched the sadistic beating of Jesus and saw various people spit in his face, jeering Him and mocking Him, I could not help but get angry. At first I was angry at the Pharisees, Judas, and then the Romans and the crowd of “lemmings” that joined in, but then I remembered my topic for yesterday’s WFTD.
My anger should be directed towards my own sin and satan. Jesus died because of all of humanity’s sin. The vicious crucifixion was the punishment necessary to pay for my sins and yours. Jesus willingly took that punishment. The scourging, the many blows to His head, the crown of thorns that were beaten onto his head, the nailing to the cross, the dislocation of His shoulders, and the spear in the side, as horrible as they were, did not tell the entire story of the agony and “suffering”
that Jesus endured on our behalf. God turned His back on Jesus when He became sin. For the first time in His life Jesus was separated from the Father. Who can imagine what it must have been like for a holy Son of God who had never committed a sin to mysteriously become sin, (indeed all sin ever committed since the beginning of time including the vilest of the vile), whereby His Father could not even look upon Him. Yet He willingly did it in order that we might once again be reunited with Him forever.
Jesus accomplished His mission. When we get to heaven His nail scarred hands and feet will serve as eternal reminders of his unequalled love for us. No matter what we have done, He has already taken the punishment and He will forgive us. All that is required of us is to believe in the only Son of God, His death, burial and resurrection and repent of our sins. It is what Christ has “DONE” that saves us.
Watching this movie will give anyone a genuine understanding of the incredible love that God has for us and just how much of a price was paid for our souls. Hopefully everyone will come away with a genuine appreciation for our Savior.
No… Christmas is not about Santa Claus, Christmas is about the birth of Jesus. It is about the ultimate Christmas present, Jesus Christ, God’s gift to all the world….
Luke 24:46
Then He said to them, “Thus it
is written, and thus it was necessary
for the Christ to suffer and to rise
from the dead the third day,
and that repentance and remission
of sins should be preached
in His name to all nations, beginning
at Jerusalem.
