I spoke with two of my three sons last week, the youngest and the eldest. Both remarked independent of each other how fast time seems to be moving. Last night we drove down to Key West to go to a Japanese steak house and my wife mentioned it too. Geez, what’s going on with this?
Actually time is moving at the same pace it’s always moved, but as we get older, we begin to notice it more. Some folks I know especially those on a peak versus the valley and are currently basking in their success would stand at the edge of the world and stop it from spinning if they could. They are loving life and just don’t want to see it all end. Alas in spite of everything we do it does end in a short period of time and horror of all horror the world will soon forget them, (no matter how important or how much money they accumulate.)
The world continues to spin and the years of our lives are woven into its tapestry. I have two pieces of art that are abstract. One is a photoshopped woman standing in surroundings that appear surreal and mystical. The other is a large tapestry with flowing colors that don’t seem to resemble anything we have seen or can relate to. Upon viewing either rendering, guests invariably ask me what each is saying.
My answer is always the same, “What do you want it to say?”
No one knows what the artist was thinking when the idea for it spun around in their head before they made it become reality. There is no book defining what its creator wanted to tell you about it.
I suppose one would have to ask the artist. I don’t know if either one of them is still alive and whether or not they would tell you if you asked. But their artwork lives on accomplishing its purpose of evoking emotion from its viewers. Some love it like me and others think it’s simply another indication that I’m crazy and makes no sense.
The greatest artist the Universe will ever know is God. Some things that He has created are easily understandable such as His sun coming up every morning and setting in the evening. Down here in the Keys folks flock to the best viewing spots on the ocean like lemmings to catch glimpses of His glorious sunrises and sunsets.
Sunrises and sunsets over the sparkling ocean are far easier to understand than love bugs. Those pesky insects that even birds will not feed on are to my mind useless. When millions of them hatch, they hover over the roads and smack against the windshields and front grills of vehicles and splatter and are next to impossible to remove from your car. I cannot find a single use for them. They seem to live only to reproduce and then they die. Only the artist who created them knows why He chose to do so. God decided He wanted love bugs and now we have love bugs.
Some things are known only to our Creator and no matter how much time passes we will never understand them . . . UNLESS . . . one is a Christian and Christ answers all of those questions for us when we arrive in heaven. Actually I have a list of questions I hope to ask Him or perhaps the answers will just magically appear in my mind whereby I’ll know. Or maybe issues like the brevity of time we are allowed in this world or on a human level the ability to understand abstract and strange artwork are simply a mystery for us to enjoy while we can and we should cease to ask why.
I have decided to follow Jesus and that is good enough for me. In this life some things I will be allowed to understand and others I’ll just have to wait and even accept that I might not ever know. Who can know the mind of God? No one my friends. So just enjoy life as He has created it, yes love even the Love Bugs.
Isaiah 55:8
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts . . .
Have a great weekend and go to church this Sunday!
