March 16 2018 – Click here to listen
I’m ready for turkey season’s opening day tomorrow. I’ll watch the sun break through the darkness and light up the forest. I’ll hear thunderous gobbling of surrounding wild turkey Toms at about the same time. I’ll do my best to imitate the calls of a hen looking for love, and with any luck will have one in my sights within minutes. A careful shot and a trophy old gobbler will be harvested and minutes later I’ll be home enjoying a hot cup of coffee.
I look forward to it with great anticipation.
My wife, who will make the long drive to Honey Lake with me today is not so enthused. She will have to listen to me tuning up on my turkey calling during the long 6 hour drive. Then she will hear me rambling around the house getting ready and more than likely slamming the door when I leave before daylight.
So, it’s two against one, the turkey and my wife against me. Who will prevail? Tune in Monday for an update. I won’t make my brag as to the outcome. I’m old enough to realize that too many things can go wrong to do so.
Years ago, I would have sickened you with arrogant boasts about my expert turkey calling ability, marksmanship, and encyclopedic knowledge of the habits of the wild turkey and how it is a certainty that I will handily bag one. But after being humbled time and time again I am not so boastful now.
Interestingly that is what the Bible instructs us to do. Proverbs 27:1 – Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.
I try not to boast before something happens, but afterwards I admit I can really be annoying at times. The foregoing verse however, is followed by this verse that states:
Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips.
None of us like to hear someone boasting like a braying donkey. I don’t know why I sometimes do it, especially when it comes to my hunting and fishing prowess,
except for provocation.
As if to emphasize the point, God included the term provocation in the next verse:
A stone is heavy and the sand weighty, But the provocation of a fool is heavier than
both of them.
Okay I will not give a fool’s update, lest it appear to someone as bragging. I will only tell you of the results if I don’t get one, so I can brag about my weakness.
2 Cor. 11:30
If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.
Have a great weekend and go to church Sunday. Remember to bring an unsaved friend with you to Honey Lake Church this Sunday at 11:00 to hear my personal testimony and marvel at God’s strength and my weaknesses.
