Reverend Billy Graham was once asked what had been the most surprising thing about life to him. He responded it was the brevity of it.
Hmmm . . . I can relate. Time seems to be going by at a supersonic speed. Just yesterday I was a young man and now I have grandchildren that age.
If I had a 12-foot-long white board and was asked to graphically represent eternity on it, I would draw a line from one end to the other. I would quickly realize that there is not enough room, and I would need to add arrows on each end to signify that eternity has no beginning and no end.
If I looked at the eternity representation and then graphically tried to represent mankind’s average 80-year lifespan to demonstrate its relationship to eternity, how would I do it? If I could make a dot that small, no one could see it.
I could not do it, because life on this planet compared to our next home, (eternity), is so small we could not begin to see it. We will spend time in both, but eternity is all but incomprehensible to us. Any thinking person would realize that how we spend eternity is far more important than how we spend time in this life, because we will spend zillions and zillions of years in that space.
And yet practically everyone is all-consumed with the matters of this world, primarily in making a buck. Most get up thinking of that next business deal. soccer game, paying the bills, etc., all of which amounts to zilch in the big scheme of things.
The brief time we spend on this earth compared to eternity should convince all that Jesus should be the number one focus of our lives. When we die, we will not take any material thing with us into eternity; no fancy cars, homes, jewelry, stock portfolio, buildings named after us, etc.; nothing from this world leaves with us except the good and bad things for which we will account to God the Father.
If you have accepted Christ as your Savior and have followed Him, the bad will be forgiven and forever covered by the blood sacrifice of Jesus, and as it says in Hebrews, your sins will be remembered no more. That means the things that you have done to further the Kingdom of God will be the only thing that lives on forever.
Imagine donating money to a ministry such as the Jesus Alliance which they subsequently use to reach some lost soul for Jesus Christ. I believe that person will seek you out in heaven and thank you for what you did. The same holds true for helping the poor, visiting someone in the hospital or prison. It goes for the baby that nearly lost its life to abortion and your influence on the mother not to do it and give it up for adoption or keep the child instead, a move that enabled them to live a wonderful life. I believe they will come to you and thank you.
Imagine meeting all the people you have positively affected in your life for Jesus and the ones they have affected and so on. What a great day of rejoicing that will be for eons to come.
But most importantly imagine how it will feel to hear Jesus Christ tell you:
‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
