Thornbushes or grapes

Recently several people, (including Franklin Graham), have publically questioned, (doubted), whether or not Barrack Hussein Obama is a Christian. He has stated that he is a believer, but many people are doubtful of his statements and wonder if he is simply politically motivated in making that declaration, indeed many believe he is a Muslim.

It is a touchy subject and one quickly shut down by the speech police within the liberal press. Graham made his remarks during an interview on a talk show on MSNBC and was subsequently chastised by the press and others to the extent that he issued an apology. Anyone who dares to raise this question automatically receives a rebuke and interestingly the Bible is thrown at them, not the least of which being Matthew 7:1 “Judge not, or you too will be judged”.

This is an issue that has confused many people including me. I know that I’m a sinner and I don’t have any business judging other sinners. That is above my pay scale and I cannot look at someone’s heart like God can, so I’m reluctant to cast judgment on anyone. I have enough to worry about with my own sins. But I don’t think anyone is trying to “judge” President Obama, at least I’m not. But Jesus stated that we should recognize evil deeds when we see them and not follow those who practice it.

In essence the Christian is faced with what appears to be a paradox when it comes to this subject. On one hand, we are commanded by the Lord Jesus, “Do not judge or you too will be judged”. On the other hand, the Bible exhorts us to beware of evildoers and false prophets and to avoid those who practice all kinds of evil. How are we to discern who these people are, if we do not make some kind of judgment about them?

Jesus provided an answer to this puzzle stating: “A good tree doesn’t produce rotten fruit, and a rotten tree doesn’t produce good fruit”. And again in Matthew, You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles

In the Bible fruit is analogous to deeds. He is telling us that we will know them by their fruit, (which means by their deeds, actions, and lifestyle). Proverbs states: Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right.

It seems to me that we must “judge” sin (at least to the extent of recognizing bad fruit). How else would we know if someone’s deeds were rotten and we should avoid them? The old prophet Samuel said: As the old saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,’ so my hand will not touch you. We must recognize evil for what it is in order to stay away from evil people and keep in mind that those who follow the multitude to do evil, follow in the broad way that leads to destruction.

So should we speak out or remain silent about it? 2 Timothy 4:2 instructs us, “Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage — with great patience and careful instruction.”

So I assume we should first take a look at some of President Obama’s “fruit” and draw our own conclusions as to whether or not we want to follow him in this next election.

  • Attended Jeremiah Wright’s church and listened to his hatred of whites and Jews for twenty years and considered him his spiritual mentor. Since being in the Whitehouse he has rarely attended church opting instead to be on the golf course.
  • Changed the name of the Whitehouse Christmas tree to “Holiday tree”
  • He is the first president in recent history that did not honor the National Day of Prayer in the White House with a dinner or breakfast. However he gave a formal dinner in the White House in honor of the Islamic holiday, Ramadan.
  • Strong supporter of abortion, which includes the horrible practice of partial birth abortion. He’s voted several times to allow a “live” aborted baby to die on a tray if it survives the abortion process. He supports the Freedom of Choice Act. This act would force Christians to perform abortions
  • Obama is a supporter of the homosexual agenda and is on record as saying that the homosexual lifestyle is no different than the heterosexual. He did away with “Don’t ask don’t tell” in the military and has stated that clergy that preach against homosexuality are homophobic
  • Has stated that he does not accept that Jesus is the only way to enter Heaven.
  • Approved new Human Embryonic stem-cell lines for experimentation
  • Obama, while admitting that America has “a very large Christian population,” told the Turkish press that “we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation. …”

I’m going to stop with this. In my mind Obama’s deeds obviously do not support the Christian belief system, but I leave it there. I cannot judge him, God will do that. I do recognize that his deeds do not match his rhetoric and I don’t want to follow this man. I offer to him that the solution for sin and its consequences is the Lord Jesus Christ.  I hope and pray that Mr. Obama will recognize that truth.

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
