Borrow at great peril

My wife and I have been vacationing in the Florida Keys with one of my sons and his family. It’s been nice to spend time with them especially my little twin granddaughters who get up early and come sit in my lap and snuggle while I have my morning coffee.

When I watch the evening news it makes it all the more depressing to see our country spending its way to financial ruin and knowing that these innocent little girls will have to repay all of that crazy debt. It reminds me of drug addiction, alcoholism, smoking cigarettes, and gorging food. Everyone knows it will eventually kill you, but they just keep right on doing it until it does.

Jewish people are known to be good business persons and money managers, among other things, because the Bible teaches sound money management principles and especially discourages borrowing and they as a nation have heard it preached for thousands of years.

Borrowing money on personal credit cards to buy stuff you cannot afford, or buying a house with a mortgage payment that is too high will lead people to go bankrupt. Likewise if companies like General Motors, Delta Airlines, Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac borrow money to spend more than they take in and lose billions upon billions every quarter they are going to fail.

Individuals and companies are not alone; even the powerful government will fail if it continues to borrow money from China and other countries in order to spend trillions of dollars it does not have on social programs and entitlements in order to garner votes for Obama and those who are like minded. The national debt is already dangerously high and we are doomed to failure if something is not done quickly.

Call me a cynic but personally I don’t believe that very many politicians will be reading the Bible and heeding its warnings about spending money we don’t have any time in my lifetime. Do your part to evangelize them by voting against these big spenders come November and instead vote in some fiscally conservative common sense candidates.

If enough people will get off their lazy tails and do it, my children, grandchildren and yours, just may have a chance. Otherwise it just may be them trying to climb a fence in order to illegally immigrate to another country in order to try and find a non-government job.

Deuteronomy 28:44
“He shall lend to you, but you will not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you will be the tail. So all these curses shall come on you and pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you would not obey the Lord your God by keeping His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you”
