I watched the news this morning and a couple of things caught my eye. A bank robber was caught yesterday. It seems that the police were able to track him down because it was discovered that he wrote his robbery note demanding money from the bank teller on his own personal check. You guessed it, the police found him at his personal address printed right on his check!
The other item of interest that caught my eye is that it appears as though the New England Patriots football organization has been caught red-handed video taping opposing team’s signal calling efforts and then relaying the opposing team’s signals to the Patriots’ offensive coordinator. If these allegations prove to be true, the commissioner of football will undoubtedly come down hard on someone today.
We all shake our heads at the apparent stupidity of doing something like this. As I think about it I come to the conclusion that little thought was given to what would happen if they got caught prior to engaging in their dishonest activities.
I can assure you the bank robber is the laughing stock of the jail that he is currently residing in and I’m sure this poor bloke had a sleepless night. He will be serving hard time for years to come and will have ample time to reflect on his poor judgment and I feel sure his fellow inmates will remind him often of the stupidity of this blunder.
Likewise I would give good odds that the coach of the New England Patriots did not sleep well at all last night either. Imagine what his life will be for the next several weeks as he is caught up in the whirlwind of our ravenous press. He is one of the best coaches in the NFL and his team has among the best talent, now his “sterling” record and the performance of these star athletes are in question and will likely always be in question. The truth is this team did not need to steal their opponent’s signals in order to handily win. This organization will pay a heavy price for this lapse of sound judgment and willingness to be dishonest.
I am currently in Los Angeles and last night when we went to dinner we went to a restaurant downtown LA. There was an outdoor portion of the restaurant and I saw some people smoking outside. I tried to hurry by them to get to the inside restaurant as I do not like to smell cigarette smoke. Guess what? It was not cigarette smoke it was marijuana. These people were nonchalantly smoking marijuana at a downtown restaurant in LA apparently with no fear of consequence.
It is apparent to any casual observer that there is little thought given to honesty, integrity, and absolutely no serious thought to consequence by too many of our citizens. Such it seems is the way of the world.
The Bible assures us that the day will come when we will account for everything we have done. Think long term and build your life upon the tenants of righteousness. Don’t violate God’s laws and end up regretting doing some spur of the moment thing without thinking it through. Sin is just like throwing a heavy rock at a plate glass window. When you commit to throwing the rock and it leaves your hand, the consequence will surely be that the window will break and shatter into a million pieces, (just like lives are shattered by sin’s consequence every single day). If we commit sin we will pay a price for it; it is as simple as that.
There are no shortcuts in life and breaking God’s laws and society’s laws will eventually catch up with those who stubbornly break them. Consider the consequences of what might happen before committing to action. Don’t drink and drive, take drugs, engage in sex outside your marriage, lie, steal, cheat; instead live the good life of being honest with high integrity and morals with no regrets. Don’t spend the rest of your life, (or eternity) regretting some stupid decision that is similar to the rock leaving your hand and you cannot take back.
Proverbs 10-25
When the whirlwind passes by,
the wicked is no more, but the righteous
has an everlasting foundation.
