Few things are more despicable to me in life than politicians. In the last few months as the political process heats up I have been invited to meetings with some very powerful politicians including one who is a former Senator from Tennessee and a television actor on Law and Order, (Fred Thompson), who will more than likely soon be running for President. In spite of my low esteem for politicians, I seem to be drawn to them like a moth to a bug light and although my schedule has prevented me from attending any of the meetings thus far, I was enamored by the idea and felt it was an honor to receive such an invitation where I could meet one on one with such powerful and famous people.

I suppose this is hypocritical on my part and a paradox. Most of the politicians in Washington would sell their mother for enough votes. They seem to me to be more intent upon serving their own interests than serving the country. Why then am I enamored and honored by having an opportunity to meet with them? One might ask the revered evangelist Billy Graham the same thing. I believe Billy Graham to be one of the most effective and spiritually led people to have ever lived on this earth and hundreds of thousands if not millions have been led to the Lord by this saint. His one weakness in my opinion was his obsession with being around Presidents and powerful leaders including Richard Nixon whose private tapes revealed was quite a despicable politician who it seems would do anything to retain power.

When I was in high school my nick name was “Mr. Cool” as recorded in my high school senior year yearbook. I was wild, rebellious, and reckless, and yet I was one of the most popular kids in school. I would not want one of my little granddaughters to ever date anyone remotely like Mr. Cool, nor would I want one of my sons hanging out with him. Many of the things I did were just outright wicked and yet good girls from good families with good upbringings clamored for a date with me, (just like moths attracted to a bug light). Had I been teaching Sunday school, I would have probably been labeled a nerd. How odd???

Why are so many of us attracted to the things in the world that are not wholesome? We have a sinful nature and lust for worldly things. Even if we are “born again’ we are tempted on a daily basis and it is a constant struggle to live a righteous life. Satan uses power, fame, money and material things, sex, drugs, alcohol, and a variety of other weapons to entice us. Don’t be drawn to the bug light of sin, but instead take the high road of righteousness. Because you know what happens to a bug that gets too close to a bug light Z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-t-t-t-T!!!

Romans 12:21
Do not be overcome by evil, but
overcome evil with good.
