Is it a sin to get angry? Nope! The Lord is perfect and cannot sin, yet the Bible teaches that the Lord is “angry all day long with the wicked”. A good example of God’s anger boiling to the surface was when Jesus became angry at all of the vendors that had turned His Father’s house, (the temple of Jerusalem), into a “den of thieves” as He referred to it. They were busily “hawking” their wares selling merchandise in this the holiest of holy places. Jesus overturned their tables and ran them out of there.
Is it a sin to hate? Nope! According to the Bible there are six things the “Lord hates and seven that are detestable to him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, a false witness who pours out lies, and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers”, (Proverbs 6:16).
I for one would not want the Lord God creator of all angry at me all day long or even for a minute or one second. I would not want to face the wrath of God and I definitely fear God. The Bible states unequivocally that it is a fearsome thing and that the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. This concept is lost on many people who seem to think God is some kindly old guy floating around up there who will grant them free admission into heaven just for being who they are, (which invariably means they view themselves to be a “good person”). God is holy and sin repulses Him. The only way to please Him is to be protected by the blood of Christ that atoned for that sin.
When Moses went up on Mt. Sinai no one could even come near the mountain even animals like oxen or they would die if they even touched the mountain. After just being in God’s holy presence, Moses face glowed so brightly that he had to wear a veil in order for people to look upon him without being blinded. Throughout the Bible those who have encountered even angels which are far below God have collapsed in unprecedented fear for their lives just by the sight of one. John saw Jesus in a vision on the island of Patmos and wrote in Revelation that when he saw Him he fell at His feet “as though dead”. The Bible states that mountains flee from His face.
Yes it is a fearsome thing to face God almighty. Fortunately for those of us who love His Son Jesus and have accepted Him as our Savior we will escape the fierce anger of God that will be poured upon the non-believers. We will instead experience the opposite of His wrath; we will soak up His love for eternity. Jesus said nothing above or below can remove us, His children from Him and that is comforting to say the least. The wicked on the other hand will not only suffer, but the Bible states they will “see and be vexed”. Imagine “seeing” and regretting for eternity that you did not take advantage of God’s mercy and instead chose to face God head to head in defiance and rebellion. It is a fearsome thing to face the anger of God almighty and pay the price for that defiance.
Psalm 112:10
The wicked man will see and be vexed,
he will gnash his teeth and waste away
