Orson Welles once said the following:
“In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed – they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy and peace and what did they produce….? The cuckoo clock.
Based upon this rationale warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed revived classical art, literature, and learning and the Christian way of life produced nothing but a cuckoo clock. Actually the word Renaissance by definition means to be born again. Perhaps after thirty years of chaos and mayhem, the Italians were ready to be born again. Sometimes it takes the darkest of times to turn mankind from evil. I doubt if that was Mr. Welles’ intent with his statement, but it sounds good to me.
